The Pokémon Trading Card Game has captured the hearts of fans for decades, and one of the most nostalgic sets among collectors is the Base Set 2. Base Set 2 was released in February 2000, combining cards from the original Base Set and the Jungle expansion to give fans a chance to get some of the most iconic cards with a new twist. Although mixed at its launch due to the reprinted nature of the set, it has become an essential part of Pokémon TCG history. Today, we’ll explore the top three most valuable cards from Base Set 2.
1. Charizard (#4)
Charizard has long been the crown jewel of Pokémon card collecting, and its Base Set 2 Holo Rare version is no exception. Like many other early sets including Charizard, this card remains highly sought after by collectors. Here’s a blog of the Top 7 Charizard Cards.
Current Value: Ungraded cards generally sell for about $280 depending on the condition. If you were looking to get a PSA 10 copy of this card, expect to pay upwards of $9,000. You can check out PSA.com for Graded Card pop count.
2. Blastoise (#2)
Another highlight of Base Set 2 is Blastoise, the powerful final evolution of Squirtle. The Holo Rare card displays this water-type Pokémon mid-action, showcasing all the strength and elegance it was designed to embody.
Current Value: You can expect to find an ungraded card of Base Set 2 Blastoise for around $80 on eBay.
3. Venusaur (#18)
Rounding out the three Kanto starters is Venusaur, the grass-type Pokémon. The Holo Rare card displays the imposing nature of the Pokémon itself, making this a central attraction in any collection.
Current Value: You can find this Base Set 2 Venesaur selling for around $75 in good condition on eBay.
While Base Set 2 usually doesn’t draw as much attention from collectors as its predecessor, the original Base Set, it is an important set in Pokémon TCG history. The reprints that made up this set gave fans who missed out on the initial release of the Base Set a chance to get some of their favorite cards. Additionally, Base Set 2 featured a unique set symbol in the form of a stylized number “2” inside a Poké Ball, which easily differentiates it from earlier sets.
Base Set 2 has grown on collectors over the years, especially for its nostalgic value and the chance to own reprinted versions of iconic cards. It may not have introduced new cards, but it did a lot to increase the accessibility of the Pokémon TCG.
